LOST - An Appropriate Title

I didn't jump right on the Lost train. In fact, I boarded rather cautiously. After seeing a few episodes here and there, I thought it was a rather boring show that made no type of sense. However, Ryan really wanted to give it a chance so he asked for the first season on DVD for his birthday. I think this was right before season 4 started on network TV. So, we flew threw the first season in just a couple of days and found ourselves at Walmart at 2am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning looking for season 2. Needless to say, we found ourselves addicted.

My Lockonian faith in the series started to waver sometime between Claire just randomly wandering off into the woods by herself without so much as an explanation and Ben "moving" the island. I had little confidence that the writers had any idea which direction the series was headed and even less confidence in a resolution to all of the absurd situations the characters found themselves in... time travel, Ben vs. Whidmore vs. everyone, the crucial numbers and the electromagnetic energy, the nuclear bomb, Jacob and the man in black...WHATEVER! Against my better judgement I hung in until the bitter end.

So, the end. What am I to say? I am not sure I have really processed it all. I do know that I still have questions that definitely went unanswered. Or, I feel that the answers that were provided were seriously lacking in content compared to the time invested in posing the question. I think I was expecting/hoping that the island was a figurative place more than literal. If LOST really was a show that was exploring human nature and trying to be a true character study I was hoping the product or conclusion would be something more than "Everybody Dies." Surprisingly, I already know that about human nature. This is what would have happened if it was all up to me:

• Flashbacks are the characters lives in which they are sad, alone, unfulfilled, lacking some type of meaning.


• The Island and the plane crash represent some sort of defining moment in their lives; a figurative fork in the road of their lives when they are given a chance to change.


• Flash forwards represent them continuing a life devoid of purpose or meaning


• Flash sideways represent a parallel exsistence where they have made choices that bring purpose, meaning and ultimately happiness.


• Death on the Island represents a choice on the part of the characteras to which exsistence they choose for themselves


• I would have spent less time introducing erroneous characters and circumstances.

Anyway, that is just how I would have done it. In the end, I liked the show. For the most part it was entertaining. And I can't deny that it always kept me guessing. And although I was a little disappointed in the way it ended, I can't argue that it was truely a unqiue twist on the average and traditional prime time television show. I wish more tv could be like LOST.

Twitterpated

I am twitterpated. You know that flighty, excited, weak in the knees feeling you get when you begin a relationship? I think I have found everything I could ever want…everything I have always been looking for: honesty, passion, sincerity, playfulness… Friday night rolls around and I am goofy with excitement. The amazing thing is that this is not a new relationship. It has been developing on and off for about 3 years now and I am astonished that it could still be this electrifying! OK, I am just going to say it out loud:

I LOVE FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!

Seriously people, this is THE. BEST. SHOW. EVER.

(So before I begin my shameless gushing, let it be noted that although I do love this show, I in no way condone or agree with the standards and morals practiced by these Dillon teenagers…and I genuinely hope their demonstrated behavior is a Hollywood exaggeration and not the societal norm).

If you have never experienced the ever increasing acceleration of heartbeat as a result of being engulfed amidst the drama and joy of a great television show…you need to start now. And don’t you even dare fool yourself into thinking you will get the same satisfaction out of your little reality show dramas or your talent competitions. YOU DESERVE BETTER.

Let me tell you why this show is so great. First, you will never have to drag your husband/boyfriend/friend that is a boy/significant male counterpart to the couch to watch this show. They will want to watch this show. Hello! It is about football. OK ladies, chillax! You are NOT going to have to sit through another boring sports competition. True, this show is about football. But it is about so much more. It has drama. It has romance. It has comedy. It has tragedy. It truly has something for everybody.

This show is all about the family drama. But not that TGIF 20 minute solvable drama. This stuff is gritty and real and most importantly, honest. If you are looking for the best love story/ couple on t.v. look no further than Eric and Tammy Taylor. Sometimes I feel like I am spying on a real family. Their communication and method of sorting through problems is truly laudable. At the same time, their arguments are so real I almost feel embarrassed that I am listening in. And, they are arguably the best parenting team on TV.

Remember that awkward, apprehensive person you were in High School – always trying to do or say the right thing, while secretly wondering if you really are that nerdy? Landry Clark has truly captured the meaning of teenage angst…creating the most hilarious comic relief moments EVER. Seriously, I can’t even tell you how funny this kid is. You just have to watch it for yourself.

Riggins is probably the only kid that has ever successfully achieved high school popularity whilst simultaneously never washing his hair. Riggins is the perpetual underachiever that you just can’t help loving… a victim of a wrecked home and the representation of the failure of the American public school system. I am still not even sure Riggins can read.

I probably identify most with the hero of our show, 7 a.k.a. Matt Saracen. He is just trying to do his best amidst trying circumstances and somehow he just keeps getting the bum end of the deal. Plus, I love the uncomfortable chemistry between him and Julie Taylor. They are just sooo cute together.

So, those are just a few of the amazing characters on the show…not to forget Buddy Garrity, the bumbling idiot or Tyra, the school’s resident “hottie”. But the characters and stories aren’t the only reason to tune in. The acting is flawless. The writing is stellar. The camerawork is crazy good – more moviesque than television. The subject matter is touching, heartbreaking and real.
I am going to stop there because I am starting to sound like a crazy person but I am passionate about good television and this is THE BEST. People, you need to watch this show. Fridays at 8 on NBC. I have seasons 1 and 2 on DVD and you can totally borrow them and get caught up or you can watch it for free on hulu.com.
